Irish Bishop Kevin Doran of Achonry and Elphin has backed the cancellation of a Christmas concert by country singer Nathan Carter inside St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Boyle. He explained that churches are sacred spaces, not concert venues or “disco settings”: “The important thing is to preserve the nature of the church and the sanctuary as a sacred space,” he said. The December 13 concert had been approved by a previous parish priest. Tickets were already on sale. Then, the new parish priest cancelled the event after taking charge of the parish this autumn. The Diocese has rules governing concerts in churches. Music need not be strictly liturgical, but it should be spiritual in character and compatible with the sacred nature of the building. Pervert Jesuit finally laicised after decades of abuse. The Society of Jesus has expelled Spanish priest Francesc Peris, 84, from both the clerical state and the Jesuit order. A canonical penal process found him guilty of sexually abusing minors over several decades. However, Peris is cared for in a Jesuit residence. The punishment was announced on October 5. It comes more than two years after Peris himself admitted abusing minors. On May 7, 2024, the Jesuits publicly disclosed that Peris had “recently” acknowledged sexually abusing minors as far back as 1972. Yet when questioned by secular authorities in a Barcelona criminal investigation in October 2024, he denied the particular allegation being investigated. Peris was never convicted by a Spanish criminal court. Proceedings against him were ultimately closed because the alleged offences were considered time-barred. Bishop James Beckman of Knoxville, Tennessee, has revoked the faculties of Fr David Mary Engo who has associated himself with the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X (FSSPX), “He is not authorized to exercise public priestly ministry anywhere within the Diocese of Knoxville.” David Mary Engo was ordained a priest in 1997 by then-Bishop Seán P. O’Malley of Fall River, the future Cardinal of Boston. His religious and community status has a somewhat complicated history. He was incardinated into the Diocese of Fort Wayne–South Bend in 2010, while simultaneously being excardinated from the Diocese of Fall River, Massachusetts. Silveira travels the world to celebrate the Mass. He gave a glimpse into his travels during his address at the Catholic Identity Conference in Pittsburgh on October 4. He belongs to the Missionaries of the Holy Cross, based in Puma, Tanzania. Belize Fr Silveira’s most extensive mission was in Belize. At two Catholic schools, administrators asked him to celebrate the Latin Mass. At Bishop Martin’s College, approximately 350 students attended, roughly half of them Protestants. At Muffles College High School, Silveira celebrated before some 750 students, again roughly half Catholic and half Protestant. Nearly 300 received Communion. He also found a remote Catholic community that had begun meeting to pray the Rosary in Latin.
