On 27 April, Mrs Sarah Mullally commissioned the Director of the Anglican Centre in Rome, Anthony Ball, as her representative to the Holy See. Despite the Anglicans having their own church in Rome, the ceremony took place at the Church of Saint Ignatius of Loyola which belongs to the Jesuits. Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle delivered a homily about an alleged "common faith and unity in Jesus Christ".

The optics of this really aren't good. Why did this need to happen in a Catholic church in Rome when there's a perfectly decent Anglican one within the walls?

"Here were two pastors meeting each other": Mrs Sarah Mullally, who holds the title 'Archbishop of Canterbury', hailed her meeting with Pope Leo XIV as warm. In an interview at the Venerable English College in Rome after the meeting, she said that they had "met as pastors". And: "We both recognise that, regardless of me being a woman, this is a significant moment in that both our churches have been on a journey together to deepen our friendship, to pray together and to seek that unity to which we are called."

"Archbishop" Sarah is encouraged by Leo XIV. She got the impression she was a pastor along with him.

"Blessed the Man"

We post the art essay from the Magnificat for the April issue. It's about the work titled, "Blessed the Man." The artist is Anonymous and goes back to the 9th century. It's in Stuttgart, Germany. The reflection is written by Father Gabriel Porretta. He's a scholar of medieval Christianity and theology teacher at Providence College in Rhode Island.
How very appropriate is this old religious work of art with another war taking place in the Middle East.
Pilate's words, "Behold, the man!" (John 19:5) are cruel mockery as he displays the whipped and bloodied prisoner to the screaming crowd. The words mean: look at what you call a man. Look at how weak he is. How defenceless. How beaten down. And the words have menace: this is who you are in the hands of Roman justice, and any one of you could be next.
But the unknown artist of the early-9th-century Stuttgart Psalter noticed that, through the mockery and the menace of Pilate’s words, an echo of another voice can be heard: "Blessed the man"…

Bishop Fellay: Excommunication Highly Probable

Bishop Bernard Fellay has warned members of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X (FSSPX) that they could face excommunication after the episcopal consecrations planned for July 1.
He made these remarks during a sermon at a confirmation on April 19 in St. Marys, Kansas, USA, as reported by AdVaticanum.com.
Monsignor Fellay called it “enormously probable” that the FSSPX would be declared excommunicated and schismatic. He repeated: “There is a very high probability.”
And: “They are so to say forcing themselves to do it. But whatever, God can do miracles. It’s not the end.”

Vatican Reviews Bishop Martin’s Decisions on Liturgy in Charlotte

The Vatican’s Dicastery for Divine Worship has acknowledged receipt of a “hierarchical recourse” filed against the apparent refusal of Bishop Michael Martin of Charlotte, North Carolina, to respond to requests concerning liturgical matters.
The Vatican letter, dated February 16 and signed by Fr. Pierre Paul, confirms that the case has been assigned protocol number 369/25 and will be examined according to the applicable procedures.
However, in the Vatican, such procedural formalities often lead nowhere; even the acceptance of an appeal does not guarantee any intervention or substantive action.
Bishop Martin has aggressively curtailed Catholic liturgical practices in the Diocese of Charlotte.

Francis to Male Caregiver in Concubinage: “Do They Give You Communion?”

“Pope Francis was like a second father to me, and I still miss him deeply,” said his nurse, Massimiliano Strappetti, 56, in an interview with Corriere.it on April 19.
Francis hated hospital stays and joked whenever he had to go to Gemelli Hospital: “You’ll see—the cardinals are preparing the conclave now.”
“Every morning when he woke up, he would ask me, ‘Hello, who died today?’ That was just how he was,” Strappetti recalled.
One day, Strappetti told Francis that he was divorced and living with another woman. The pope replied: “And what’s the problem?”
He then asked: “Do they let you receive Communion? If not, tell me the names of those priests who refuse - I’ll go speak to them myself!”
For Strappetti, Francis was a “surprising” pope.

This Is Why The Cross Matters
The cross of Jesus Christ and His crucifixion is the central message of the gospel, representing God’s love and the sacrifice for our sins. While the resurrection and ascension are important, they are meaningless without the cross. The cross is the wisdom, power, and love of God, and it should be the central focus of our faith and lives.

Bishop Strickland Comments on Papal Welcoming of Female "Archbishop"

On April 27, Bishop Emeritus Joseph Strickland of Tyler, Texas, commented on PillarsOfFaith.net regarding the scandalous reception of Mrs. Sarah Mullally at the Vatican. The woman bears the title and attire of the Anglican “Archbishop” of Canterbury.
Monsignor Strickland managed not to mention Pope Leo XIV, even though he had received the lady as an equal “bishop.”
Rather, Bishop Strickland merely reaffirmed the Catholic teaching that the priesthood is divinely instituted and that the Church has no authority to ordain women. He argued that public gestures that give the appearance of honoring someone without valid ordination in an office could confuse the faithful about the nature of the Catholic priesthood and ordination.
In conclusion, he called on Catholics to respond with prayer, Eucharistic adoration, penance, and reparation for the Church.

Leo XIV Won’t Stop German Homosex Blessings – German Theologian

Following recent remarks from Leo XIV, theologian Thomas Söding, a layman, sees "no threat" to the blessing of homosexual couples in Germany. He has been one of the best-known voices linked to the German Synod.
Speaking to Deutschlandfunk on April 27, Söding said: “What can and should happen with homosexual couples in Germany has been agreed with Rome — and that will not change.”
According to Söding, Leo XIV’s concern is ensuring that blessings are not confused with marriage, stressing that the distinction upheld by Rome is also reflected in German pastoral guidelines.
Munich Cardinal Reinhard Marx had recently forced his clergy to perform or enable homosexual blessings. According to Söding, such blessings have “long been common practice” in many German dioceses. The real issue, Söding said, is transparency: “The question is whether people talk about it openly or not.”
Cardinal Marx’s move creates “more clarity - and that is a good thing.”

Is The Catholic Church is Necessary for Salvation?

Editor’s note: in light of yesterday’s news, pictured above, we publish this article from Dr. Kmita addressing the central dogma at stake.
In an interesting article entitled “Baptism, salvation, and the necessity of the Church,” Dr. Larry Chapp discusses a challenging issue raised by Pope Benedict XVI in a 2015 interview (originally in Italian) recently translated and published on Catholic World Report:
There is no doubt that on this point we are faced with a profound evolution of dogma (una profonda evoluzione del dogma). While the fathers and theologians of the Middle Ages could still be of the opinion that, essentially, the whole human race had become Catholic and that paganism existed now only on the margins, the discovery of the New World at the beginning of the modern era radically changed perspectives. In the second half of the last century it has been fully affirmed the understanding that God cannot let go to perdition all the unbaptized and that even a purely natural …

Is science the enemy of faith, or its loudest witness? Jay Richards, Senior Research Fellow at the Heritage Foundation, dives into the "fine-tuning" of the universe—from the precise force of gravity to the discovery of over 5,000 extrasolar planets. In this interview, Jay explores how 20th and 21st-century discoveries in physics and cosmology support the classic philosophical arguments of St. Thomas Aquinas. We discuss why an ecumenical approach to science is vital for our culture and how the "lingua franca" of science is revealing the invisible qualities of God as described in Romans 1.
